Right after the Start of Summer, the green plum base in Fujiabian, Honglan Subdistrict of Lishui District has been bustling with activity. Thousands of mu of plum orchards are heavy with unripe green fruits swaying gently in the breeze, marking the official start of the annual green plum picking season.
Strict Standard: Minimum Diameter of 2.8 Centimeters
As early as 6 a.m., the green plum purchasing station at Fujiabian Science and Technology Park was already fully operational. Large fruit screening machines roared, sorting plums precisely by size. Those smaller than 2.8 centimeters in diameter were sorted out, while plump and well-sized ones were collected into storage baskets.

Among the crowd stood Pang Jianliang, person in charge of the Anhui factory of Liuliumei Co., Ltd., who was carefully inspecting the fresh green plums beside the screening machine. "Manager Pang seldom visits the producing areas in person, yet he arrived bright and early today," said Chen Yiguo, General Manager of Fujiabian Science and Technology Park Group Co., Ltd. Pang came on-site to conduct quality checks on the first batch of green plums this year, and his business partnership with Fujiabian has lasted for a full decade.
Liuliumei has signed a long-term strategic cooperation agreement with Fujiabian. All purchased green plums are directly delivered to its Anhui factory to be processed into green plum wine, crispy preserved plums, dried plums, plum jelly and other products. "Green plums from Fujiabian steadily reach over 2.8 centimeters in diameter. Their fine varieties and scientific cultivation fully meet our requirements, laying a solid foundation for our product competitiveness and market reputation," Pang Jianliang noted.
Busy Plum Picking Across the Hills
While machines hummed at the purchasing site, farmers were busy harvesting plums all over the mountains. In the plum orchards, villager Zhang Jianmei and her three friends picked fruits swiftly with small buckets in hand, filling them with fresh green plums in quick succession. "We started working at 7 a.m. We get 0.4 yuan per jin picked, which earns us some pocket money. Working together chatting and laughing makes the work easy, and we can earn over 300 yuan a day," Zhang Jianmei said cheerfully while wiping sweat off her forehead.
On remote hillsides, Pan Buyun from Bozhou, Anhui Province devoted himself to picking plums. He came here on the recommendation of local friends. "I began picking at 4:30 a.m. It feels like traveling while working," he shared.
According to Chen Yiguo, this year is an off-year for green plums. The estimated per mu yield stands at around 1,200 jin, slightly lower than usual, yet the fruits grow bigger with better overall quality. Purchasing prices follow market trends, and top-grade plums can command higher rates. "Lower output does not mean lower income, which is typical of the annual yield fluctuation of green plums."
The small green plum has nurtured a complete industrial chain. Besides supplying major brands like Liuliumei, Fujiabian has also developed in-depth processing industries. A variety of finished products including green plum wine, crispy plums and plum jelly have been launched, greatly boosting product added value. At present, Honglan Subdistrict boasts 8,000 mu of green plum plantations with an annual output value exceeding 200 million yuan.
Fruit screening machines keep running nonstop, while farm vehicles fully loaded with fresh green plums head out one after another. Surrounded by lush green mountains and filled with delicate plum fragrance, Fujiabian ushers in its busiest and most rewarding harvest season after the Start of Summer.
